DOLPHINS – Best vacation ever!!

We went to Captiva, FL for vacation and got the best boat trip. We were going to one of the islands to look for seashells but on the way we got DOLPHINS!!!! On September 16, CaptivaSanibel.com released readers’ choices for the annual “Best of the Islands Awards.” The “Best Museum” readers’ pick for the islands of Sanibel and Captiva, FL was the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum.

If you’re new to Sanibel and Captiva, FL or you’re a long time resident who has somehow managed to miss the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, take the advice of local news readers and visit this exciting attraction. You can plan to tour the museum’s exhibits plus take part in special programs available throughout the year.

You can see and study over 30 exhibits at the Shell Museum devoted to mollusks from all over the world. Exhibits relate to everything from fossil shells and rare specimens to the role shells have played in art and history. You can also learn about shell habitat and shells commonly found on Sanibel Island and Captiva, FL. An on-site learning lab is a terrific attraction for kids, as it includes a hands-on play area, video, games and a tank containing mollusks indigenous to the area.

The Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum program schedule includes ongoing workshops such as live tank demonstrations and family beach walks focused on finding and identifying shells. Public programs relate to not only shells, but other local interests and environmental topics such as birding, ship wrecks and climate change.

Public programs coming up include the week-long “Celebrate Sanibel” celebration. This celebration will include programs related to Sanibel’s past, present and potential future. You can also join the “Adventures in Paradise Shelling Trip” on November 6, 2010. You can travel from Port Sanibel Marina to North Captiva, FL by boat and experience a variety of shelling opportunities, plus a lunch break.

If you’re interested in fossils, a special field trip to Rookery Bay hosted by Dr. Gary Schmelz will be a great choice. You can explore layers of shells on this exciting day-long fossil trip.

A more elaborate shelling trip to Guaymas, Mexico is being offered for December 3 – December 10, 2010. You can find out about this trip by contacting the Museum, but hurry. The sign up deadline is September 30, 2010.

Lecture series, children’s programs and additional field trips are among the other programs scheduled at the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum in the coming months and in 2011. Residents of Sanibel Island and Captiva, FL can take advantage of the variety of programs arranged and publicized well in advance to make the most of all the Shell Museum offers.

Enjoy the Best Seafood and the Best Place to Watch the Game at One Location

There are many, many eateries to choose from on Sanibel. Yet only a handful of Sanibel Island restaurants are consistently named as favorites with locals as well as visitors and tourists. Timbers and the Sanibel Grill both received “Best of the Best” readers’ choice awards in an annual poll the Island Reporter sponsors.

Dine at Timbers for “Best Seafood”

In the past, Timbers restaurant as received “Taste of the Island” dining awards including best restaurant for steak, best restaurant for dinner and best seafood entrée, among others. This year, the Island Reporter’s readers chose Timbers as the best among Sanibel Island restaurants for seafood.

On the menu you’ll find the Island’s largest selection of fresh fish and seafood. Each day, the menu includes a “Fresh Fish Report” that includes the fresh catches of the day. You can also enjoy dishes specially designed around these daily catches as part of the daily menu.

You’ll find all of your favorites on Timbers’ menu, including Florida Lobster Tail, Sea Scallops and Captiva Crab cakes. There’s a huge variety of shrimp entrees to choose from including Skewered Shrimp, Steamed Shrimp, Baked Stuffed Shrimp, and Shrimp Scampi. Crunchy Shrimp along with Crunchy Grouper are two specialties of the house.

You can also enjoy your choice of platters at Timbers, including a Broiled or Fried Seafood Platter or the Crunchy Platter that includes both Crunchy Shrimp and Crunchy Grouper. The Triple Shrimp Platter includes Shrimp Scampi, Crunchy Shrimp plus Baked Stuffed Shrimp.

Enjoy the Game at the Sanibel Grill

The Sanibel Grill was voted the “Best Place to Watch a Game” in the 2010 Island Reporter’s readers’ choice poll. The Sanibel Grill is now open Saturdays and Sundays for football at 11:30 am. You can view the college as well as pro football games on 16 big screen TVs.

You can enjoy a great selection of soups, salads, appetizers, sandwiches, burgers and much more at the Sanibel Grill while you watch your favorite sports game. Since the Sanibel Grill and Timbers share the same kitchen, you can count on getting the best seafood here, as well. It’s almost like visiting two Sanibel Island restaurants in one when you visit the Sanibel Grill.

of Bonita Beach Park, Bonita Springs

bike rentals, boat ramp, food & equiPMent rental concessions,

Activities: birding, boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking,

biking, shelling, swimming, wildlife viewing

Pets: Yes, on 6’ leashes. State parks do not permit pets on beaches

or playgrounds, or in bathing areas, cabins, park buildings or

concession facilities

Of Special Interest: A haven for wildlife, the islands and their

waters are home to West Indian manatees, bottlenose dolphins,

roseate spoonbills, marsh rabbits, and bald eagles. The two mile

long beach is accessible by boardwalk or tram and was selected as

the #4 beach in Florida by the Travel Channel.

Fort Myers Beach

Location: Accesses #11 thru #35 are on Estero Blvd. from Big

Carlos Pass to the south to Matanzas Pass Bridge to the north.

Colored banners designate their location, number and have symbols

indicating whether they have amenities, accessibility or parking

(fee required) #37 through #41 north of the Matanzas Bridge on

Estero Blvd. allow for foot-traffic only-no parking.

Parking: Metered parking is located on Old San Carlos Blvd., Estero

Blvd., Center St., and Fifth St. $2/hour, 2 hour limit. On Fifth St.,

the spaces are $1/hour. Long term parking is available on all beach

access streets and in the lot under the Matanzas Pass Bridge. $1/

hour, no time limit. In season, get there very early to find a spot or

park on the mainland and take the trolley over.

Square with beachfront restaurants and shopping

Activities: fishing, swimming, shelling, handicapped access,

sunbathing, walking

Pets: yes, on 6’ leashes

Of Special Interest: Fort Myers Beach (Estero Island) boasts miles

of white, sandy beaches, where the ocean floor slopes gently

towards the horizon with no sudden drop-offs or big waves. All

of the beaches are “natural beaches”, meaning that they are

not raked or otherwise groomed. This allows beach visitors to

enjoy all of the coast’s amenities while preserving its native

environment. The busy intersection of San Carlos Boulevard

and Estero Boulevard is packed with bars, beach-apparel shops,

restaurants, and motels that draw singles and families. It’s a

Coney Island atmosphere that is referred to as “Times Square.”

Lynn Hall Park

Location: 1050 Main St., Fort Myers Beach, in the heart of

downtown

Amenities: licensed fishing pier with bait shop, picnic shelters

with grills, playground, outdoor showers, restrooms, shopping

Of Special Interest: Located just north of the foot of the

Matanzas Pass Bridge, next to “Times Square” in the heart

of downtown Fort Myers Beach, this lively gulf front park is

adjacent to shopping and restaurants.

Bowditch Point Regional Park

Location: 50 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach

Hours: 8 AM to ½ hour past sunset

Parking: $1/hour, 75 spaces

Amenities: day docks for boats up to 28 ft, paddle craft

launch onto Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail, walking trails

through preserve area, picnic tables and grills, food concession,

restrooms and changing facilities

Activities: boating, swimming, fishing, sunbathing, walking,

handicapped access

Pets: no

Of Special Interest: Located on the northern tip of Fort Myers

Beach, this park has access to the Bay and the Gulf and provides

a much quieter experience than the beaches in town.

Bunche Beach (Preserve)

Location: 18201 John Morris Road, Fort Myers

Parking: free lot

Amenities: none

Activities: swimming, photography, sunbathing, walking

Pets: no

Of Special Interest: This 731 acre preserve is a natural tidal

wetlands area. It is pristine and completely natural offering a

sandy beach, mangrove forests, salt flats and a wide variety of

wildlife for viewing.
